In referendums held on Sunday 27 September, the Swiss population were called to vote firstly on a “moderate” limit on economic migration (a demand from the populist right) and secondly on the creation of a proper 10-day paternity leave. Swiss citizens clearly rejected the first proposal (61.7% voting against) and just as clearly approved the second (60.3% in favour). As regards immigration, this choice should pave the way for a framework agreement to be signed with the EU. Meanwhile on the issue of paternity leave, the vote in favour reopens the debate on a more profound overhaul of parental leave.
There was a strong turnout of 59% as the Swiss population voted in referendum covering issues ranging from the adoption of paternity leave and limiting immigration, to the acquisition of fighter planes and an amendment to the law on hunting. When it came to topics with an impact on the world of work – paternity leave and the question of immigration – the choices were clear.
