Swiss federal lawmakers have voted by a wide margin to extend the framework governing remote working, aiming to "better reflect the opportunities offered by digitalisation" and promote a healthier work–life balance. However, socialist and green MPs, who form a small minority, warned that the move could allow employers to exert greater influence over workers’ personal lives.
On 26 September, the Swiss National Council adopted by a two-thirds majority a bill on making remote working more flexible, which was the result of a parliamentary initiative launched by Liberal MP Thierry Burkart and supported by the centrist and conservative parties. The text, which still needs to be approved by the Council of States (representing the cantons), which is expected to vote in favour, will introduce greater flexibility in remote working hours.
