Launched in September 2016 by Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, the Global Deal initiative seeks to use social dialogue as the vector to restate and rebalance the economic and social dimension of sustainable and inclusive globalization. How can this come about? The answer is by inviting governments, companies, trade unions and other organizations to engage in and bolster social dialogue. In December 2017, the French Government backed the Global Deal and in aligning with the initiative’s philosophy, has identified global social dialogue as a major axis of action, especially given the appetite French companies display for this level of industrial relations.
In November 2017, in the corridors of the Gothenburg Social Summit, President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s backing for the Global Deal. The announcement spurred an increase from 40 to 60 in the number of partners joining the Global Deal that Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven inaugurated in September 2016.
