On 03 June, TEKSIF, Turkey’s main textile trade unions signed a three-year agreement with 26 big businesses in the sector that will raise salaries and bonuses for the 9,000 members of the union. The agreement comes on the heels of the former hard fought 2013 agreement’s expiry. It represents a small step forward in a sector that employs more than two million and which is marked by a lack of regulation.
Following three months of negotiations TEKSIF, the Federation of Textile Workers’ Unions and the equivalent employers’ body agreed to raise salaries by 5% in the first year of the agreement and by 4% for each six month period during the remaining two years. This comes on top of a 30% increase in the minimum mandatory wage (to 1,300 Turkish Lira, or €390 net) that the government decided upon and implemented in January 2016.
