On Sunday September 28 the Governor of the State of California announced that he had signed a piece of legislation making businesses liable when their subcontractors violate certain rules in the workplace.
The law, which was signed by the State Governor on September 28, provides that businesses (employing more than 25 staff) have a civil responsibility for all workers employed by any subcontracting business (itself employing more than 5 staff for the service contracted). The responsibility covers wages, and workplace health and safety rules and compensation when the worker is injured in the course of employment. In certain circumstances, interim work agencies also come under this law.
