Nissan North America has declined a US State department invitation to participate in voluntary mediation proceedings in order to resolve a long running row over worker unionization at one of its U.S. plants. Both the United Auto Workers (UAW) and IndustriALL requested this U.S. State assistance to persuade Nissan to respect OECD guidelines for multinationals.
“A voluntary mediation process could not be established since Nissan was not willing to participate in mediation,” announced a U.S. National Contact Point (NCP) in the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which works to further the OECD guidelines for multinationals. Local NCP representatives have however met with Nissan’s head office counterparts.The NCP had met with both parties in September 2014.
