On 23 March and just as in France, Uruguay is undergoing a full day of union action to protest against a plan to raise the legal retirement age. If the text is adopted, the retirement age will increase from 60 to 65 over the next 20 years.
Under the slogan “for my future and for yours”, Uruguay’s sole national trade union confederation, the PIT-CNT (Inter-Union Workers and National Workers Convention), is calling for strike action and a mobilization in the capital city Montevideo on 23 March, to protest against the pension reform. “We denounce the fact that this reform is a new unwelcome, backward measure, which benefits the dominant classes”, objected the national confederation, in a message published on Twitter on 20 March.
