Bangladesh: first anniversary of the collapse of the Rana Plaza building

On April 24, 2013, 1,135 employees died and more than 2,000 were injured in this tragedy.  After it, the worst in the history of the textile industry, the sector’s stakeholders commenced many actions in different areas: improving plant safety, wage increases for the sector’s workers, and the introduction of a compensation procedure for the victims and families of this catastrophe.  Where are things one year later?

Compensating the victims. As early as September 2013, negotiations opened, presided by the ILO, to come up with a comprehensive plan for compensating the families of the 1,135 people killed and the 2,500 people injured. Most of them had to contract a loan to face the loss of a family member (and therefore an income) and 75 percent of survivors are unable to work.
