Amazon is now the 6th largest global retailer

The 21st edition of the “Global Powers of Retailing” survey from Deloitte showcases how the 250 largest retailers performed in 2016. U.S. firms, headed by Wal-Mart, remain the big gorillas. Amazon, ranked 186th in 2000, keeps gaining traction.

In the year 2016 (including fiscal years to June 2017 for some firms), sales of the 250 largest retailers grew by 4.1% – adjusted for currency valuations – to US$4.4 trillion and net profit margin increased to 3.2% of sales. On average, global sales drove 22.5% of revenue. Within the “Top 10”, U.S. retailers make up 7 entries.
