Majid Al Futtaim, owner of exclusive franchise rights to manage Carrefour in the Middle East and Africa, is pushing aggressive expansion. After announcing a future move into Uzbekistan in December 2019, the Dubai-based company opened a first Carrefour grocery store in Uganda, ready to sell to a population of 43 million. The store is in Oasis Mall, within the capital city of Kampala.

Hani Weiss, C.E.O. of Majid Al Futtaim Retail, said that he plans to open a second Carrefour store in Kampala in early 2020. This is expected in the Metroplex Kampala shopping mall. The International Monetary Fund considers Uganda as one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, with a G.D.P. growth of 6.2% in 2018 and expected to be at 3% for 2019.
