British retailer Tesco (300,000 employees) is equipping store staff with body cameras, to counter the sharp rise in physical assaults by customers and to enhance safety.
In a letter published in the Mail on Sunday, Tesco’s Managing Director Ken Murphy claimed, without giving detailed figures, that physical assaults in stores had risen by 30% in a year. That’s why he hopes the use of body cameras will better protect staff that he considers “heroes in the shadows”. “They deserve to be safe at work”, he insisted.
