The Irish retailer Smyths Toys (110 medium-sized stores in Ireland and the U.K.) is about to double in size with the purchase of Toys’R’Us stores in Germany (68), Austria (15) and Switzerland (10), i.e. 93 stores in total. The value of the takeover was not disclosed. “In this region, Toys’R’Us is profitable. It has many loyal customers and the management team is competent,” said Tony Smyth, an executive in the family business. “Their store network is a good basis for our expansion”.
