Areva: EWC calls for stoppages in France, Belgium and Germany

Overcapacity.  Gathered on October 26, the EWC members called for compliance with the information/consultation procedure and the possibility of presenting a backup plan.  The day before, in Belgium, following an extraordinary council meeting, the management of Areva’s Dessel subsidiary announced the closing down of the site, which employs 150 people.  The operation should be achieved by March 2012.  The company explained that the situation was difficult in Western Europe and that it was in overcapacity, and also that the Fukushima incident would also have an impact on the market, both “in the short and medium terms.”  In a press release, the members of Areva’s EWC say that the site is renowned for its “excellent quality and technical level.”  They add, “Icing on the cake is that the site is profitable and that the fuel activity makes a 2-figure profit.”
