On 13 December, the center-left government of Argentina’s newly sworn in (10 December) President Alberto Fernández announced a decree that it published in the official bulletin entitled Emergencia Pública en Materia Ocupacional - ‘Employment Emergency’. Stated in its simplest terms, all unjustified dismissals will receive double compensation. This emergency measure came into effect on the same day the decree was published (13 December) and will run for 180 days.
This ‘Public Emergency’ decree is a response to the ‘need to arrest the worsening employment crisis,’ the executive’s statement declared. However in an attempt not to dissuade already reluctant companies from hiring staff, the statement also clarifies that ‘this measure will not apply to any hirings made after the 13 December’.
