Austria: federal government strengthened existing measures to help disabled people joining a company

Erwin Buchinger, Austrian Secretary of Social Affairs, announced on October 23, 2007 the launching of the "Aktion 500" plan, a series of measures to help companies ready to hire disabled people. Whereas the total unemployment rate has gone up to 6.6% (Austrian statistics), almost 10% of active disabled people are without a job. (Ref. 070910)

“People with a disability did not take enough advantage of the decrease in unemployment”, the Secretary Erwin Buchinger declared during a press conference in Vienna on 10/23/2007. Currently, almost 29.000 disabled people are registered to the Austrian Employment Agency (Arbeitsmarktservice – AMS). Out of the 94.000 Austrian people with a disability of at least 50%, over two thirds are between 40 and 60.
