Austria: government and social partners agree to force businesses to publish men and women’s wages

It is notably the publication by the Department for Women of the “Women’s Report” (Frauenbericht), the first in 15 years, that motivated the social partners to bargain with the government for an amendment to the Professional Equality Act to achieve more transparency and help reduce the gender pay gap. According to this report, active Austrian women are better qualified but earn, in average, 18% less than a man with similar training. In absolute terms, and when taking account of all forms of employment, the gender pay gap even amounts to 25-40%. The report also notes that things haven’t improved over the last decade, placing Austria at the bottom of the European ladder, right before Estonia.
