Austria: nearly 3 million employees vote for their representatives in the Chambers of Labor

The election for the general assemblies of the Chambers of Labor, organized every 5 years, started on Monday, January 27 in 3 Austrian Länder.  They will continue in the 6 remaining Länder until May 19, with a ‘hot’ period in March-April when people will vote in Vienna and Upper Austria – the two most industrialized regions in the country.  Nearly 3 million people are expected to vote for 850 representatives.  The 9 Chambers of Labor (AK) and their federal headquarters (BAK) are one of the 4 pillars of Austria’s “social partnership.”  They represent workers’ interests in all areas save collective bargaining, which is unions’ sphere of influence.  At national level, there are 6 different lists directly related to the political parties.  In 2009, the Group of Socialist Trade Unionists (FSG) won a majority of votes (55.8 percent).
