Austria: ruined by a banking scandal, the Confederation of Austrian labour unions is struggling to survive

On Monday, September 4th, 2006, the ÖGB will launch a major reform of its structures. Ruined by the scandal of Bawag, the bank of labour unions, the ÖGB has 2,1 billion euros of debts. This scandal should weaken Austrian trade unionism permanently. (Ref 06840)

As from today and until October 18th of this year, 1,3 million followers of the 13 labour unions Austrian members of the ÖGB can answer the questionnaire sent by the ÖGB on the reform of the Confederation. This questionnaire is as much a call to proposals for a deep reform of the Confederation as an opinion poll to measure the morale of the union troops. At the same time, followers are invited to give their opinion in one of the 27 conferences which will take place in regions. A first report of
