Austria: spring collective bargaining schedule in the industry

The PRO-GE and GPA-djp unions released their schedule for the spring collective negotiations in manufacturing.  They affect about 120,000 employees.  As negotiations in the electrical and electrical engineering industries started on March 16, the only major collective negotiations in process are in banking and are at a standstill after four bargaining rounds.  “In the production of manufactured goods, economic conditions are good.  And, with the unrestricted wave of austerity affecting Europe and the high inflation rate, buying power must be improved” explained Rainer Wimmer and Karl Proyer, respectively leader of PRO GE and deputy federal secretary of GPA-djp.  The latter said, “The good results in 2011 aren’t the result of any market speculation, but of the commitment made by workers.”  The trade unions also announced that they would particularly ensure that the lowest wages would get proper increases.  With 3.3 percent in 2011, inflation in Austria was almost back to its record level of 1993 (3.6 percent).
