This Thursday November 6 the common union front assembled more than 120,000 supporters in Brussels for its first national demonstration protesting against measures that were fixed by government agreement without prior union consultation. The cancellation of an inflation-linked wage hike, the extension of the retirement age to 67, and increasing flexibility in working conditions head the list of strongly criticized economic and social reforms. The Prime Minister who met with union leaders after the demonstration stated that “these measures are necessary to safeguard the future of the country”, whilst at the same time he charged his Minister for Employment to “discreetly” renew social dialogue.
