Belgium : Confederation of Christian trade unions rips back-to-work plan for the unemployed

In October 2004, the national unemployment agency (Onem) launched the first meetings with the unemployed aimed at checking their behaviour as regards job hunting. For the second anniversary of this new measure, the CSC - one of the country's major trade union federations- reacts to this "activation" plan. (Ref. 061090)

On 30 June 2006, 106 477 long-term unemployed had been solicited by an Onem “facilitator”. 37% of them did not bring sufficient proof of their job hunt and were forced to sign a contract in which they promised to intensify their efforts. After a second interview, 2576 of them had their unemployment benefits temporarily cut off. The CSC believes “the number of job seekers that are punished may very well exceed the number of those who have accessed a decent job after the activation process”. The
