Belgium: professional reclassification of pre-pensioners under 58 years old

The Council of ministers approved, on Friday October 6th, a draft royal decree which lays down that pre-pensioners under 58 years old will have to follow a professional reclassification course starting in 2008. This measure is part of the Pact of solidarity between generations. (Ref. 061017)

Further to the Pact of solidarity adopted one year ago by the federal government and the social partners, a new measure approved by the Council of ministers aims at limiting the number of dismissals via pre-pensions. Nowadays, most of the redundant workers aged at least 58 are entitled to a supplementary pre-pension benefit, payable by the employer, and which is added to the unemployment benefits until 65 years old, the legal retirement age.
