Belgium: report 2006 of the higher Council of employment

In its annual report, the higher Council of employment (CSE) insists in particular on the continuation of efforts for the least qualified people. Made public on last 15 December, this report says between 40 and 45 000 jobs were created in 2006, which are added to the 70 000 jobs created during the three previous years. A result still quite far from the 200 000 new jobs promised by Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt in 2003. (Réf. 061278)

“This is a good result, due partly to the improvement of the economic situation”, specifies the CSE. However, this improvement is accompanied by a strong increase of the working-age population. Consequently, the employment rate (number of jobs/working-age population) increases by only 1.1 % since 2001, to reach 61 %, whereas last year, the average of the EU 15 to 65 % (63.2 % in 2001).
