Belgium: the asbestos compensation fund is adopted

The Belgian government decided to create a compensation fund for people hit by an illness caused by asbestos. The fund was adopted as part of the December 27, 2007 Act. The application modalities will be subjected to further regulations. The asbestos fund will come into effect on April 1, 2007. (Ref 070131)

The government will annually grant 10 million euros in order to compensate sick people suffering from affections such as asbestosis, pleural patches, lung cancer and mesothelioma. This legislative measure was shrilly criticized by the environmental party, “Ecolo,” reproaching the fact that it prevents victims who will beneficiate from a compensation from any opportunity to press charges against industrialists who used asbestos.
