Belgium: union action in big call-centres to fight against stress

The national employees' union (CNE) and its Flemish equivalent, the LBC, have conducted public awareness campaigns in the country' s big call-centres. Entitled "Stop the BOSS (Burn Out Stress Syndrome)" the campaign is within the framework of an action month organized on a worldwide scale by UNI, the world service trade union. (Ref. 061094)

By handing out anti-stress kits to employees – generally young and non-unionized-, the campaign aims at denouncing a too heavy workload and the important stress. “It is the first time that Belgium takes such an active part but we have been organizing this campaign since 2003 because we notice that working conditions in call-centres are a permanent problem “, explains Bernadette Ségol, secretary regional of UNI Europa.
