Brazil: metalworkers at Volkswagen site approve short-time working for 300 workers

A majority of the 3,400 workers at Volkswagen’s São José dos Pinhais plant (Paraná, south-east of Brazil) approved, on February, an agreement with the German carmaker that suspends, for 3 months, the employment contract of 300 of them.  In keeping with the Labor Code, during this period, the workers concerned will be especially trained to Volkswagen’s production system.

On February, a majority of workers at a Volkswagen plant in Brazil voted for short-time working for 3 months for some of the workers. Proposed by the Grand Curitiba (SMC) metalworkers’ union, affiliated with Força sindical, this measure came into force on February 24 and aims to keep activity from falling on this assembly line. 3,400 people work on this site, 2,400 on the assembly line itself (800 per team). The factory makes 640 cars a day instead of 870. Established in Brazil since 1953,
