Brazil: Sao Paulo metalworkers win wage campaign

The Sao Paulo metalworkers’ union, member of the Central Workers’ Union (Central Unica dos Trabalhadores, CUT) said that the so-called “wage campaign” was a “victory.”  In this State of Brazil, the campaign affects nearly 800,000 metalworkers.  In addition to the substantial wage increases secured, progress was also made in terms of social rights in the collective agreements negotiated in each branch of the sector, such as the extension of maternity leave, first job incentives and the protection of disabled workers.  In the auto industry, the agreement, which will cover Ford, Mercedes, Scania, Toyota and Volkswagen, provides for a 10% wage increase, minimum remuneration of BRL 1,500 (€626) and a BRL 2,500 (€1,044) bonus.  Next year, in September, wages will increase again: they will be adjusted to inflation in addition to a 2.39% wage increase.  Other branches (car parts, steel, mechanics, naval and space industry, electrical goods, armament…) reached similar deals.  The new agreements set the 180-day maternity leave as a general standard, for adoptions as well.
