Brazil: series of pay deals struck in the metal industry

Several sectoral agreements leader to a global 8 percent wage increase were signed in the metal industry in the State of São Paulo.  Some were signed by Força sindical, some were signed by the CUT (central workers’ union, the majority union in Brazil), between the end of October and the middle of November 2013.  Respectively, the two unions represent 800,000 and 250,000 workers in the entire state.  (Ref.  130749)

Affiliated with Força sindical, the metalworkers’ union in São Paulo and Mogi das Cruzes, the city touching the capital, reached these agreements “without a strike,” its leader, Miguel Torres, pointed out when they were approved on October 27 during their general meeting. While keeping this mandate, and that of President of the National Metalworkers’ Federation (CNTM, also affiliated with Força sindical), Torres, 55, has also become the confederation’s leader since then.
