At the start of May, the Chilean government presented a bill to the country’s National Congress that seeks to achieve the “modernisation of work”, by creating greater flexibility of working hours and allowing workers, for example, to work four-day weeks. Currently under discussion in a parliamentary committee, the bill has proved controversial and has alarmed trade unions in the country.
“Improve the quality of life, create more opportunities and afford greater freedom” to Chilean workers. These were the promises made by Chilean president Sebastián Piñera (right-wing liberal) and his government during the unveiling of the bill entitled “Modernisation of work to balance work, family and inclusion” before the National Congress, on 2 May.
