Denmark: labour unions report strong loss of members

Danish trade unionism is in crisis, even if Denmark still has one of the highest rates of unionization among European countries: 80 %. LO, the main confederation of trade unions, lost 230.000 members since the mid 1990s: it now has less than 1.3 million members, down from 1.5 million in 1994. 2006 is a black year for LO, who was affected by the end of the union monopoly, called “closed-shop”.
