EU: Charter of Fundamental Rights published at the OJEU

The Charter of fundamental rights, proclaimed on December 12, 2007, within the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, was published at the OJEU on December 14, 2007. When the Lisbon Treaty, adopted on December 13 by heads of State and government, will come into effect, the Charter will have the same binding value as the Treaty. One of the seven chapters is dedicated to economic and social rights. (Ref. 071023)

The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union gathers in a single text all civil, political, economic and social rights of European citizens as well as of all the people living on the Union’s territory, which are defined as common EU values. Its dispositions apply to EU institutions and bodies and to Member States when they enforce Community Law. A detail nonetheless lessens the Charter’s scope through one of the Protocols added to the Lisbon Treaty which introduces specific measures
