EU: European trade unions from the network industry asked the European Commission to act in a more transparent and participative way

The European Public Services Union (EPSU), the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) and the services union Uni-Europa jointly reacted to the European Commission's presentation of its evaluation of the impact of competition policies and of the internal market in terms of network industries providing services of general economic interest. Facing a European administration which puts forward consumers' gains in the electricity and telecom sectors, unions are proposing a more balanced view and ask the Commission to consider foreign experiences or even to evaluate these European policies' impact on cohesion, sustainable development, equality and employment. The joint reaction immediately followed the workshop organized on September 10 by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the Commission in the document it prepared on the “evaluation of the performance of network industries providing services of general economic interest.”

The electricity sector. relying on a study carried out by the Public Services International Research Unit PSIRU (attached) trade union organizations underlined that:
