EU: implementing regulation on the new rules for the coordination of social security systems published on the OJEU

A pillar of the free movement of people, a fundamental EU freedom, and a major gain for social Europe, Regulation 1408/71 enabled, in most cases, to neutralize the impact of intra-European migrations on social security rights, mostly for migrant workers, by coordinating national legislations. This regulation was amended by Regulation 883/2004 but, to be complete, its application needed to be revised. This is what the Council of Ministers of July 27 did. The application regulation and the 883/2004 basic regulation will therefore replace, as of march 1, 2010, regulations 1408/71 and 574/72. National governments will have six months to adjust to the new deal. Then, the revision of the European regulation regarding the coordination of social security legislations can achieve its objectives: be simpler and more modern to improve the right of European citizens.
