EU: negotiations on the temporary work draft directive started up again

The EU's Portuguese presidency revived talks on the draft directive on temp work which had stopped in 2004. If the political context of its main opponent - the United Kingdom - has changed, a dramatic turn of events is not very likely. Indeed, the last round table meeting did not reveal any turnaround in the British government's stand, even if a shift was observed. Today, the bill is still on the negotiations' table and appears on the agenda for the last Employment ministers' council under Portuguese presidency, on December 5, 2007. (Ref. 070880)

A new compromise effort. As part of a negotiations’ meeting which took place on October 23, governmental authorities reviewed all the articles of a text which has been abandoned since June 2004. The draft directive on temporary work aims at establishing minimum standards for temp workers’ working conditions, and notably at guaranteeing the principle of equal treatment of these workers compared to similar workers in the using company.
