EU: new directive on electromagnetic fields by October 31, 2013

Application moratorium.  The European Commission suggested extending the moratorium for the application of Directive 2004/40 on the protection of workers exposed to electromagnetic fields to April 30, 2014, in the middle of the campaign for the European election.  To make sure that the case would be closed by the end of this term, the MEPs adopted, on March 29, an amendment bringing this moratorium to October 31, 20134.  Deemed too restrictive, notably for the medical industry, the 2004 version is currently being reviewed.  In June 2011, the European Commission suggested lessening employers’ obligations to protect workers exposed to electromagnetic field at work and excluding the use of MRIs and other research areas (see our dispatch No.  110409) from its scope.  For these trades, the European executive wants to gather experts to determine an ad hoc protection system.
