EU : social partners for commerce sign initiative for occupational qualification

The European social partners for commerce – EuroCommerce and UNI-Europa Commerce – will launch the initiative for occupational qualification in European commerce in Brussels on 28 November 2006, enabling to help young Europeans in finding their first job in commerce. The project was funded by the EU Leonardo Programme and actively involved 7 Member States. Through the support of the social partners, this initiative, based on an on-line and/or CR-Rom vocational training programme, which includes a standardised test and certification system, will be further promoted in the Member States. Produced jointly by major retailers, commerce trade unions and educational institutions in several EU Member States, the training and certification system will support the European mobility of commerce employees. It can also contribute to an upward harmonisation of the necessary knowledge and skills in countries, where the present vocational training system is not yet up to sufficient levels. The training and certification system can also be particularly useful for small and medium sized enterprises, which can use it as a reliable assessment of the basic vocational qualifications of job-seekers.
