EU: the European Commission sets out its social policy approach

During consultations on Tuesday June 09 the College of Commissioners set out the main lines of its social program. The Commission intends to work on a basic minimum of social rights in terms of social protection “so as to avoid a race to the bottom” and “improve social convergence”, as well as proposals on a “Mobility” package for detached workers, and coordinating Member States’ social security policies. The commission will also review the package of 24 texts that govern occupational health and safety as well as the Working Time Directive by the end of the year so as to present its proposals in 2016.

Eight months after taking office the European Commission has presented its social policy roadmap. In addition to reiterating its willingness to get the social partners involved at every level (c.f. article No. 8935) the Commission also set out in broad terms the main foci for its work on social policy. Continuing with its goal to reconcile the European Citizen with the European Project the Commission will work to design a set of social protection minimum standards in order to bolster the social
