Finland: employers frequently violate basic rights of foreign employees

The Finnish newspaper Heslingin Sanomat gave a balance the investigations carried out by the inspectors in charge of monitoring the working conditions of immigrant workers. The results show a frequent infringement of labour laws by the Finish employers. (Ref. 06807)

Inspectors in charge of monitoring the working conditions of immigrant workers visited about 900 workplaces during the past year. In about 40 cases, the violations appeared to be severe. They led to a police investigation. The most frequent violations concerned mainly pay and working hours. Foreign workers are often paid less that Finish workers for exactly the same job, and employers often neglect to pay overtime. Workers’ rights were most frequently violated in fields of fixed-term contracts
