The eighth day of demonstrations on Thursday 26 May calling for the withdrawal of the draft Labor Code reform drew between 153,000 (police data) and 300,000 (union data) participants. Protest at the workplace reform has reached a new level in the country with last week’s oil refinery blockades and the start of strike action at the nuclear power plants as well as at some ports. Unions’ combined in opposition to the draft law (CGT, FO, FSU, Solidaires and the National Union of Students Unef, UNL, and FIDL) are calling for a ‘continuation’ and ‘an escalation’ they intend to organize a ‘citizens vote’ across workplaces and education establishments as of next week.
Unions that are mobilized in opposition to the reforms will, ‘as of the start of next week roll out a citizens vote (…) in businesses, administrative offices, and educational establishments” they declared in their joint press statement. The result of the vote will be sent to the president during the ninth day of mobilization that has scheduled a general assembly in Paris on 14 June.
