Germany: Act on reducing working time to care for a dependent person to come into force on January 1, 2012

Reconcile work and caring for a dependent person.  Kristina Schröder (CDU) thinks that the new law is an “innovative system” meeting real needs.  Thus, the Minister claims that, out of the 2.4 million people who receive care insurance, nearly 1.7 million are cared for at home.  Besides, 76% of employees want to be able to take care, at home and for as long as possible, of a dependent family member.  “Now, they can take the time to care for a parent without too big of a loss of earning or the fear of loosing their job” the Minister told the MPs.
