On June 4, 2008, the Bundestag's MPs debated, for the first time, the bill aiming to enhance the protection offered to whistleblowers. The Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB), thinks that the government's bill for whistleblowers' protection doesn't go far enough. On the other hand, employers feel it might encourage whistle blowing and jeopardize social peace in the companies. (Ref. 080472)
In 2005, after the scandals of bad meat deliveries, the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection decided to protect whistleblowers better (see our article No. 080416). To that end, the Ministry amended article 612a of the Labor Code in its new bill on human food and forage (Lebens – und Futtermittelgesetz). This amendment states that employees are allowed, under certain circumstances, to inform legal authorities of “serious offenses” without telling the company beforehand.
