Germany: Family Minister wants to introduce “parental leave” for grandparents

Families are stressed because they don’t have enough time.  Since 1965, the German government regularly publishes, at the Bundestag’s request, reports on the situation of German families and draws conclusions.  Carried out by a committee of independent experts, the “8th Families Report,” 249 pages long, which Mrs. Schröder presented on March 14, is called “Family Time” and points to the decisive importance of “time resources” for families.  “Having more time is families’ top priority, way ahead of having a higher salary” the Minister explained, adding that 40 percent of parents were stressed by the lack of time.  To help families reconcile work and family life, the Minister wants to implement, from this legislature on, several measures recommended by the authors of the report, including more flexible parental leave (Elternzeit).
