Germany: first warning strikes in the steel industry

The renegotiation of collective agreements in the steel industry (104 000 workers) is making no progress. It started at the end of August in three Western Länder and in former East Germany. IG Metall decided to launch the first warning strikes in the West, starting Friday and throughout next week. (Ref 06864)

After three rounds of negotiations, IG Metall and GesammtMetall, the sector’s employers’ confederation, failed to agree on the renewal of collective labour agreements, lapsed since August 31st. In the West, negotiations started on August 23rd. They took place in three Länder, Northrein-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Bremen, and concern 85 000 employees. In East German Länder, debates started on September 1st. They concern the wages of 8000 persons.
