Germany: railroaders and public employees open collective bargaining for 2009

The first collective negotiations for 2009 started with wage claims up to 8% for railroaders and employees from local public administrations. In spite of the downturn and the disastrous economic prospects, rail unions justify their claims by the Deutsche Bahn's profits in 2008. The public sector's unions think that the situation and buying power need support and that it isn't fair to give billions in aid to the private sector and forget about the public sector's employees. The 2009 collective negotiations, starting in the rail sector (January 13) and in the public sector (January 19), should be particularly tough.
