Germany: record shortage of apprenticeship candidates

Soaring number of places offered.  The Ministers, representatives of employers’ organizations and other organizations associated with the Apprenticeship pact, an initiative created in 2004, rejoiced with the real improvement of the number of apprenticeship places in 2010/2011.  On September 30, the balance between the candidates who were still looking (11,600) and vacant positions (29,700) was 18,100, against 10,800 only last year.  Therefore, progress is comfortable.  This situation mirrors the good economic situation of German businesses over the period.  They offered nearly 63,100 new places.  Besides, besides, 38,100 businesses christened their very first apprenticeship curriculum.  In the meantime, the number of apprenticeship candidates dropped by 2.5% down to 538,500 people.  This decline is due to the removal of national service, where many started apprenticeship, and also to school reforms in Low-Saxony and Bavaria.  Minister of Employment and Social Affairs Ursula von der Leyen said, “The apprenticeship market has changed.  It has become a recruiting market” she said, referring to the situation in recent years when offer was still desperately low.
