Germany: the governmental commission on the reform of joint management is a failure

Created in August, 2005 by Gerhard Schröder and confirmed by Angela Merkel, this commission had to introduce proposals to update joint management and adapt it to European development. But on last November 13th, the employers' representatives abandoned negotiations, saying the commission's role was only to safeguard or expand joint management in its current form. (Ref. 061153)

Angela Merkel has not been listened to. For the 30 years of the law on corporate joint management (see article n°06834), Angela Merkel had called for a modernization of joint management, which is, according to her, « an essential pillar of social market economy ». It had also warned against a possible failure of the Biedenkopf commission, in charge of this job. « A failure would be a bad signal », she had then informed.
