Germany: wage agreement in the banking sector

After a marathon-negotiation, the trade union Ver.di and the employers concluded, during the night of 21 to 22 June, a wage agreement for the 240 000 employees of the German private and public banks . The compromise was welcomed by banks and analysts. (Réf. 06644)

The agreement will apply for 25 months. It provides for a wage increase in two phases: by 3% as from September 2006 and then 1,5 % as from December 2007. Employees will also receive a contractual premium of 100 euros in August 2006. Ver.di initially asked for a 5 % rise in wages. This is an “acceptable compromise”, said Uwe Fallong, a senior Ver.di trade-unionist, in an official statement, adding that “the length of the agreement was difficult to accept, but a clear wage increase was obtained”
