Great Britain: beginning of a consultation to reform the pension system for occupational diseases and work accidents

The Minister for Employment and Social Reform announced the launching of a preliminary consultation on the revision of pensions granted following an occupational disease or a work accident (Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, IIDB). This initiative falls under the government’s project to put back to work an important proportion of welfare recipients. (Ref. 070088)

Currently, the IIDB costs the government 776 million pounds (1 billion euros) a year, to compensate 350 000 people, of which half are in age to work. “We want to make sure that a work injury does not leave people on welfare for their whole life”, said the minister, Jim Murphy. Yet, for the moment, these people do not automatically have access to the supplementary back-to-work programmes. They are non-taxable allowances, granted no matter the responsibility in the beginning : it is not necessary
