Great Britain: coming mandatory transparency on the place women have in large businesses

From October 2013, companies listed on the London Stock Exchange will have to include in their annual report the number of women in senior management or on the boards as well as the total proportion of women and men they hire. The Minister for Business and Innovation says this is a way to help investors identify gender imbalances in their company and help them solve them if they wish. (Ref. 120622)

This decision by the British government comes from a recommendation on transparency in Lord Davies’ review, “Women on Boards” (see our dispatch No. 110132). The report recommended going even further but Business Minister Jo Swinson is banking on the value of reporting. Indeed, she believes this reform will “encourage companies to produce innovative and engaging reports, in line with current business best practice.”
