Great Britain: government allows large stores to open for more than six hours a day on Sunday during the Olympics

New Act.  Announced in the government’s 2012 budget, the new law provides that shops with a relevant floor area of more than 280 square meters will not be subject to current Sunday trading restrictions during the Games.  This law (Sunday Trading Act 1994) allows stores in England and Wales to open on Sunday in shops over 280 square meters, but only between 10 A.M. and 6 P.M.  In Scotland, Sunday trading has long been deregulated with shops deciding their own hours.  However, with the Sunday Working (Scotland) Act 2003, workers have the legal right to refuse to work on a Sunday.
